Mount Manaia Bush Recovery Group
It’s a bit long-winded isn’t it? It does, however, accurately describe what we are trying to do.
The group grew out of the team that has gradually improved the block of Whangārei District Council land opposite the fire station at McLeod Bay. This area is variously described by locals as ‘The Green,’ ‘The Horse Paddock’ or ‘Cornfoot’s Farm.’ We were guided by the team from Weed Action. Activities have been to clear the area by Whangārei Heads’ Road for children’s games, take out weed trees and plants and plant native species of various types. When the Council took over mowing the area in early 2020, the team decided to look further afield up the slopes of Manaia and try to make inroads into the ever-expanding weed trees. To this end we have divided the block into six areas and we work in an area appropriate to the weather and the problems encountered.
If you would like to join in our efforts you would be very welcome. We meet at 09.45 on the first Saturday of the month at 12, Tiaho Place. [This will change as we change area] Tea is at 11.00 or finish time and finish time is at 12.00. Work gear is provided.

Ritchie Rd Coastal Reserve Weed Action
It’s early days for this latest initiative, having been created in June 2020, but we hope with a little effort on a regular basis we will see a transformation of this reserve and the increase of biodiversity that results from weed control. There are many residential properties that back onto the reserve and many dedicated locals have been carrying out weed control beyond their boundaries to clean it up. At the same time there are others that have been using this space to dispose of their own green waste creating additional weed problems. We hope that the more word starts to spread of the efforts here, it will lead to a change in the public perception of this reserve & promote kaitiakitanga (guardianship) within the community. The aim of the group is to focus on controlling serious environmental weeds such as tree privet, phoenix palm, cotoneaster, tawian cherry, wild ginger, elaeagnus, moth plant etc whilst bringing awareness to turn this reserve around.

Reotahi Weed Action
Reotahi Weed Action was formed in the summer of 2019 and have been meeting regularly to deal to weeds around the Whangarei District Council owned reserve. We meet in the carpark of the Beach Rd end of the coastal walkway all year round at 9am until 11.30am. We focus primarily on the weeds from the ‘Dirtiest Dozen’ list and are very proud of the work achieved so far.
It’s not all hard-slog, we break for morning tea (home-baking if we’re lucky) and a catch up with each other. Most of us involved are there for the social enrichment just as much as the kaitiakitanga. We are always looking for more helpers to keep momentum and enthusiasm so please get in touch!

Tamaterau Weed Action
The Tamaterau Reserve Weed Action group meet every Wednesday and every 3rd Saturday of the month at 9.30am at the Tamaterau Reserve, and weed until about 12.30pm. We have been operating for about four years and and made huge progress in restoring the reserve, which is remnant/regenerating coastal podocarp-broadleaf forest. We deal mainly with jasmine, blue morning glory, moth plant, wild ginger , and Taiwan cherry. All volunteers are more than welcome!

Headland Farmpark Weed Action
Headland Farm Park is a residential development on the Manganese Point peninsular in the Whangarei Harbour. Consent was granted for the development of this area on condition that a hundred acres of coastal podocarp forest was placed in covenant. A group of landowners have been giving this area, along with other bush areas, our ongoing attention, targeting moth plant, woolly nightshade, pampas grass and Taiwan cherry.
Several years ago we read of the Weedbusters formula herbicide which we make up and use in 750 mL plastic bottles which have a plastic brush top which we use to apply to the cut stumps and ring barked areas. This is extremely effective!! Our group is enthusiastic and enjoying the rewards of our efforts, and great company!

Wharf Rd Weed Action
Wharf Rd Weed Action is targeting weeds along the coastal strip from Wharf Rd toward the Parua Bay tavern. We hold weed action events throughout the year and tackle the tree privet, eleagnus and other nasties that line this coast. All volunteers are more than welcome – look out for our road signs advertising our next weed action event!

Kohinui Catchment Landcare
We are a group of neighbouring properties who share the beautiful Kohinui Stream. We are passionate about land conservation & the health of the stream. We have lots of weedy challenges but tree privet, climbing asparagus and moth plant are some of our primary targets.
